WATSONVILLE — After a two-week holiday closure, the Watsonville Public Library and other city facilities opened their doors for the first time in 2014 on Monday.

“We’re glad to be open,” said Library Director Carol Heitzig. “The public seems glad to have us back.”

The library will continue to hold its new Saturday hours. In March 2013, the library paid off its portion of the Civic Plaza construction loan, which freed up funds. As a result, in September, the library opened on Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.

The popularity of the new hours has been steadily growing, Heitzig said, with increased attendance and new family-oriented programs.

“We’ve really been drawing a nice crowd,” she said.

Many City of Watsonville facilities closed on Dec. 23 due to the holiday season and budget cuts.

In the last five years, most city employees have forgone 10 percent of pay in exchange for working fewer hours per week and having additional closure days during the holiday season.

Essential services such as Police, Fire, airport, water turn-on and garbage collection were not affected by the closure.
