CHOWCHILLA ó Joseph Martin Cardoza died on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, in Chowchilla. He was 92.
Mr. Cardoza was born on Oct. 20, 1921, in Hanford. He served in the army during World War II from January 22, 1941 until August 31, 1945.† He served in the Pacific Theater returning with MacArthur to liberate the Philippines.†He received the Good Conduct Metal, Philippine Liberation Medal with Bronze Star, American Defense Service Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.†Mr. Cardoza was extremely proud of his service in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Cardoza enjoyed farming in the Pajaro Valley, growing row crops for 64 years. Upon his retirement in 2007, he moved to Chowchilla to be near his children and grandchildren.
Mr. Cardoza is survived by his wife of 66 years, Arlene Serpa Cardoza; son, Donald (Joan) Cardoza; daughter, Diane M. (Bob) Adney; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and sisters, Dolores Martin of Scotts Valley and Mabel (Louie) Hill of Oakley.
A Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady Help of Christians Valley Catholic Church, 2401 E. Lake Ave., Watsonville, on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Watsonville Catholic Cemetery. Mehlís Colonial Chapel was entrusted with funeral arrangements.
