WATSONVILLE — A 17-year-old Watsonville male was stabbed to death early Friday and a 20-year-old man was arrested the same day.

Autreydrez Maldonado, 20, was taken into custody just before noon on suspicion of murder, said Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputy Ryan Kennedy.

Police were initially dispatched to a home at 7:15 a.m. for a report of a loud dispute that was turning physical.

Before deputies arrived, however, a male resident of the small run-down home hauled a stabbing victim, who was bleeding heavily, outdoors to a silver Nissan sedan. After loading the victim into the car the resident sped off to Watsonville Community Hospital.

The victim, who authorities are not identifying yet, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Watsonville Police and Sheriff’s deputies sealed off the home and surrounding grounds of the Buena Vista Drive home with yellow crime scene tape. Investigators could be seen interviewing residents from the home out in the front yard.

Kennedy said the incident is being investigated as a homicide.

Several neighbors gathered outside the crime scene as the morning progressed to watch the drama unfold. A couple of them said the house is frequently visited by police. One man, who chose not to release his name, said loud music and hollering coming from the house, late at night, is common.

One man said the property, along with adjoining property running toward the corner of Freedom Boulevard, was recently sold and that the family in the home where the stabbing occurred had been evicted. Several pieces of furniture, a large mattress and other household goods were strewn about the front yard Friday. The neighbors said the home has long been in disrepair. The front fence is dilapidated and disheveled curtains hang about the windows.
