WATSONVILLE — Just before St. Francis Central Coast Catholic High School biology teacher received an award for excellent teaching Thursday, the award fell to the floor and broke.

The Crystal Apple award by KSBW is given to one teacher per month September through May, by the station and by Dole Fresh Vegetables.

Despite the broken apple figurine, teacher David Cmaylo was in good spirits.

“It was overwhelming and surprising,” he said of receiving the award.

Cmaylo has been teaching at the school for 12 years. He said he made the move to education after a career as an environmental chemist failed to satisfy him.

After realizing his wife also found she disliked her career as an attorney, Cmaylo applied and was accepted at the school, becoming one of the first teachers at the Watsonville campus. And it was a family move — Cmaylo’s wife works as an English teacher at the school.

Perhaps the career change was always in the cards for Cmaylo. He was inspired by his father, who came from a family of nine siblings, half of whom were teachers.

“My dad said, ‘just do it,’” Cmaylo said. “I think it was what I always wanted to do, it just took me a while to do it.”
