WATSONVILLE — With raucous whoops, chants and cheers of “let’s go Grizzlies,” a crowd of Pajaro Valley High School students marched down Green Valley Road Friday for the school’s homecoming parade.

The precession was the culmination of PVHS’s spirit week that included theme days such as twin day and decades, with each class taking a decade from the 50s to the 80s.

It was also the lead-in to the game Friday night, in which the team faced off against the Gilroy High School Mustangs.

More than that, it was a burst of youthful energy, a show of pride in their school and a vote of confidence for the football teams.

While the parade did not include the decorated floats typical to such events, it did included the football team and other athletes, the leadership club, folklorico dancers and nominees for the homecoming court who rode in gleaming customized lowrider cars.

“It’s actually cool,” said leadership club member Amber Gallegos, 17. “You don’t usually see this.”

Folklorico dancer Reyna Velazquez, 15, said the parade was her first.

“I’m really excited,” she said. “It’s my culture, and I like my culture. I want people to know it and try it.”

Cheerleader Adriana Lazaro, 17, said the parade and spirit week garnered the largest amount of student participation since she’s been at the school.

So many students applied to be in the parade, she said, that some had to be turned away.

“It brings the school together,” she said. “It’s so peaceful — everyone is excited for the homecoming dance.”
