SANTA CRUZ — “Today represents a remarkable day for the health of our community,” said Giang Nguyen, Health Services Agency director for Santa Cruz County at a press conference announcing the start of open enrollment under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on Tuesday.

On the steps of the county superior courthouse in Santa Cruz, Nguyen stood alongside members of the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors and leaders of the county’s medical community whose agencies have been leading outreach efforts to enroll all eligible uninsured and under-insured residents in the county.

Starting in 2014, most people will be required to have health insurance or pay a penalty. Individuals can meet the requirement by having insurance through a job, by being eligible for Medi-Cal or Medicare, by buying insurance on their own or through the state’s new health insurance exchange, Covered California.

Moreover, individuals may qualify for financial assistance to help buy private insurance, with the federal government paying part of the monthly cost of insurance.
