WATSONVILLE — Fumiko Jean Yagi-Kobayashi, formerly of Watsonville, died Tuesday, August 13, 2013, in Tammuning, Guam. She was 97.
Mrs. Yagi-Kobayashi spent her childhood in the small Japanese community of Pajaro, attended grammar school at Pajaro Elementary and graduated from Watsonville High School.
She married Eddie on March 21, 1940, and remained in the area farming apples with him until the outbreak of World War II. For three years, Mrs. Yagi-Kobayashi and her husband were interned separately, but later reunited at Poston, Ariz., internment camp. Their daughter Sumiye was born in 1944 in Tule Lake and son Ronald was born 1948 in Watsonville.
She is survived by her son, Ronald T. Kobayashi, M.D.; daughter, Sumiye Madeline Huffstutter; sisters and brothers-in-law, Masako Harada and Ted Harada of Gardenia, Chiyoko Yagi and Harry Yagi (deceased) of Watsonville, Betty Yagi and Tami Yagi (deceased) of Watsonville; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews in California.
