APTOS — The Aptos Mariners’ goalie Mckenzie Phelps held off late Carmel attacks, and Trinity Sieraski and Maddie Montana dropped in a late goal each to edge out the Padres 6-5 on Thursday afternoon at Aptos High School.
“I didn’t think we played that well today,” said Mariners’ head coach Tim Outtrim. “We could’ve played better on offense. Our defense really won the game for us today.”
With the game tied at four goals with two minutes and 14 seconds remaining, the Aptos offense woke up from their slumber. Sieraski threw in her second goal of the game and a minute later Montana all but sealed it by scoring her first goal.
“I think if we played like that from the beginning it’s not this close,” said Outtrim. “I respect Carmel, but I think we just didn’t play up to what we expected today.”
Carmel was able to score a goal at the 51 second mark, but that was the last goal that Phelps surrendered. She withstood several one-on-ones with hard charging Carmel attackers in the second half and finished with nine saves.
“She was huge,” said Outtrim. “I know they (Carmel) were hitting the post a lot, but for the most part she was making some great saves. We gave her the proverbial game ball”
Still, Carmel had a final chance with 38 seconds left, but the Mariners’ defense once again tightened up and forced them into a turnover.
The offense was able to run out the final seconds of the match for the win.
“We still have a lot of stuff to work on,” said Outtrim. “We just have to put in the hard work and continue to battle.”
They have a big battle on their hands Monday as they face a San Lorenzo Valley team that eliminated them from the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs last season in a 10-9 heartbreaker.
The Mariners split the season series with the Cougars 3-3 last year.
“That’s going to be a good contest,” said Outtrim. “We just have to continue to polish our offense and continue to play our style of defense.”
The Mariners play the Cougars at 4 p.m. at San Lorenzo Valley High School.
