WATSONVILLE — The Monte Vista Christian Mustangs got plenty of experience over the weekend at the tournament in Notre Dame, so there were no nerves left and they could focus on playing volleyball.
It showed on Wednesday night.
The Mustangs throttled Trinity Christian in three straight sets 25-16, 25-12, 25-14 to open up their season with a W at home.
“I thought we played really well,” said head coach Kiley Woods. “It was good for the girls to play with the live setting and the home crowd. We tried a few different rotations to see what worked. Overall I liked how we played.”
The Mustangs took a commanding lead to open up all three sets and were able to ride those leads out to set wins and eventually a match win.
Woods’ girls did a fine job of staying focused and keeping their foot on the gas pedal even though they held leads of 10 points or more in all three sets.
It’s something that they had worked on and talked about before this match said junior outside hitter Hillary Guerrero.
“Our team goal before the game was to not have a let down and not drop our level of play,” said the 5-foot-11-inch Guerrero. “So we really had to focus and tell ourselves to stay strong and keep pushing. Play each point and it will happen.”
It did, and Guerrero was at the center of it. She finished with 10 kills on the night despite playing with a broken finger on her hitting hand that she suffered during softball season last year when a player slid into her hand.
“I just stayed focused and I didn’t get down on myself,” said Guerrero. “I listened to my teammates too and they told me where to hit.”
Although it was the girl’s first real action, they had played in the Notre Dame tournament over the week and Woods said that that was a contributing factor to the sharpness of her team.
“I think the tournament helped us,” said Woods. “It helped get rid of some of the butterflies and I was expecting us to come out strong and they did.”
Myckenzie Toler had nine aces, Alyssa Zoppi served up 21 assits and Madison Fisher finshied with 22 digs.
The Mustangs will have a day off and will play Westmont on the road on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Then they will play in the Watsonville tournament this Saturday which starts a 8 a.m.
