WATSONVILLE — Thousands of people will descend upon Watsonville for the Santa Cruz County Fair, which opens at noon today.

They will come to see an impressive array of livestock, art displays ranging from photography to painting to sculpture and the ubiquitous All Alaska Racing Pigs, which somehow have become an elemental part of the weeklong event.

Attendees might watch the horse shows, browse a sprawling display of model trains or see a show featuring performing dolphins.

Whatever their reasons for going, most are likely to stop by one of dozens of food booths, with offerings ranging from cinnamon rolls to Chinese food to corn dogs.

“People come here to eat and enjoy,” said Jim Frazier, who owns and runs the Big Bear BBQ, which has been a fixture at the fair since 1975.
