APTOS ó The Aptos Mariners girlís tennis team hadnít faced off against Alisa in four years, so there was a bit of nerves going into the first match of the season for last yearís Santa Cruz Coastal Athletic League Team Champions.
But after early struggles the girls bounced back and came through for the win.
The Mariners took down the visiting Alisa Trojans 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Aptos High School.
They won three of their four singles matches and two of their three doubles matches.
In singles Kelly McMinn and Sanika Kshirsagar had to battle back after dropping their opening set.
McMinn played against Alisalís Aileen Bermudez, and early on Bermudez got the better of the junior.
She was able to get out to an early 1-0 lead and the two continued to swap points until Bermudez was able to win the final two games to take the first set, 6-4.
It seemed like McMinn was just shaking off the rust, as she easily took the second set 6-2, and won the tie-breaker 1-0 to win the match.
Kshirsagar, also a junior, won her match in similar fashion. After losing to Gabriela Aguirre in a tie-breaker 7-6, she regrouped and took the second set 6-1. She was able to win the deciding game 1-0 to win the match.
The duo of McMinn and Kshirsagar were last seasonís runners-up in the SCCAL Doubles tournament, and are now back to playing solo.
The two were the No.1 and No. 2 players on Wednesday.
Alisalís one win in singles came from Abigad Saldanaís 6-2, 6-7, 0-1, triumph over Aptosí Jaime Ferrell.
Sophomore Maddy Miller, was able to win her match against Celina Juarez to put the Mariners at 3-1 for the day in singles.
Aptosí No. 1 doubles team was beaten by Alisalís combo of Monica Magallanes and Susan Juarez, in straight sets, 6-4 6-1.
Their No. 2 and No. 3 teams picked up the slack however. Lyndsey Mott and Melinda Faulk won their match in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, and Julian Fuller and Melissa Tao finished off the day with a win in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
The Marinersí tennis team will try and continue its dominance in the SCCAL this season, and win itís third league title in a row.
First, theyíll have to play Stevenson at home on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
