SANTA CRUZ — Todd McFarren, the Watsonville attorney who spent eight years as a City Councilman and on several county boards, announced Monday he will vie for the Fourth District seat on the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors.
McFarren made the surprise announcement Monday at the annual Santa Cruz Labor Day Picnic.
In his time as Watsonville City Councilman, McFarren served twice as mayor, and said he worked on issues such as affordable housing and protecting the wetlands.
He has also been on the Santa Cruz Local Agency Formation Commission and the Santa Cruz Metro Board of Directors.
McFarren will be running against incumbent Greg Caput and challenger Dana Sales, who has served for years on the Santa Cruz County Office of Education Board of Trustees.
He said a county supervisor needs to be able to “wheel and deal” and work with their fellow supervisors.
“The Fourth District has been underrepresented in the county,” he said. “I think I have a good understanding of what the issues are.”
“I’m 63, and if I’m going to run, now is the time to do it,” he said.
The election is June 3.
