SANTA CRUZ — For the first time since an economic recession ravaged the U.S., hiring is picking up, a message that put smiles on the faces of the hundreds of people who attended the annual Labor Day Picnic Monday in Cathedral Grove at DeLaveaga Park.

“It’s a good day to rest and reflect on where we’re going in the next year,” said Cesar Lara, executive director of the Monterey Bay Central Labor Council. “This Labor Day is a positive one.”

Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Salinas, agreed.

“This Labor Day is very special,” he said.

Alejo also pointed to the recent celebrations surrounding the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington led by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Still, with a fight over minimum wage increases brewing in Washington, D.C. and the recent U.S. Supreme Court Decision striking down a key portion of the Voting Rights Act, Alejo said the need for labor activists is more important than ever.
