WATSONVILLE — The sheer thrill of flying has been a constant theme in Bill Sabo’s life, from his time in the Vietnam War to a career as a commercial pilot to the cherry red 1966 plane he now flies for fun.

The Monterey resident attended this year’s Watsonville Fly-in and Air Show, the event’s 49th year, with Betty, the Alon air coupe he began piloting about a year ago.

Sabo’s father was a pilot and he himself took his first solo flight at 16 before later serving in the Vietnam War.

He spent years flying cargo flights and then working as a commercial pilot for Eastern Airlines before retiring. Flying Betty has marked his return to flight, he said Saturday. The plane seats two, in an interior that’s surprisingly spacious.

Flying, he said, is the ultimate in freedom.

“Just being in a three-dimensional world — it’s just fun,” Sabo said. “The other part [of the appeal] is the knowledge that you are totally in charge of your own destiny.”
