SANTA CRUZ — A Felton man was arrested for burglary Thursday after he was caught trying to climb through a window of a residence on the west side of Santa Cruz.

According to the Santa Cruz Police Department, Ryan Sargenti, 22, was spotted by a neighbor after he allegedly removed the screen from a window of a residence in the 200 block of Chace Street and was trying to wipe his fingerprints from the window glass, police said.

Sargenti fled when police confronted him, but was caught after officers established a perimeter and conducted an intensive search. While fleeing, Sargenti went to his awaiting car and changed his clothes, police said.

Sargenti has a significant history of police contact and was on probation at the time of this arrest. He was charged with burglary and a probation violation, and booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on $25,000 bail.

In a press release, Santa Cruz Police Deputy Chief Steve Clark said the case was solved thanks to collaboration between police and residents.

“Thanks to an alert neighbor who called to report this activity, a burglar is in jail and potential victims were saved,” Clark stated.
