SANTA CRUZ — A man allegedly robbed a female bank clerk at gunpoint outside of a Bay Federal Credit Union Wednesday.

Santa Cruz Police Deputy Chief Steve Clark said the suspect approached the employee at 420 River St. at 10:30 a.m. and demanded money. The woman screamed and the suspect fled the scene on nearby Josephine Street toward the San Lorenzo River levee, Clark said. A witness told police that the suspect fired at least one shot from his short-barreled revolver.

No one was injured. Police said the suspect stole the woman’s purse.

“This makes me really nervous,” said Zoe Buck, who lives near the shooting scene. “I mean, that shots are being fired in my neighborhood — that’s scary.”

No suspects had been located, despite an intense search by Santa Cruz Police, the California Highway Patrol, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies, a Capitola Police officer and his K-9 dog. Police also used an airplane for a short while in hopes of spotting the suspect using the riverbed as an escape route.

The suspect was described by police as a Latino man about 5 feet 7 inches tall with a thin build. Police said he was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and gray pants and was also wearing a black and red bandana over his face.
