WATSONVILLE — Thirty bicyclists rolled into Watsonville Monday on a mission of heightening awareness of cancer.

Most of the riders are firefighters and have either dealt with the disease or have friends or family battling cancer.

Their ride started Saturday in Sausalito and will end in Los Angeles.

“We fight cancer and we support cancer awareness,” said organizer Jim Berklite, a firefighter-paramedic from Los Angeles County. Berklite is president of Fire Velo, the main organization behind the ride.

Each of the riders has raised at least $1,000 from sponsors of the ride. Funds raised goes to those dealing with cancer.
