GILROY The self-proclaimed "Garlic Capital of the World" is certainly earning that title this weekend.

The 35th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival kicked off Friday and will continue to run Saturday and Sunday at Christmas Hill Park.

Freda Black, of Martinez, summed up the event perfectly.

"There's the food, garlic, and then there's the garlic," she said.

Nearby, cooks fired up a grill with a pile of garlic cloves on top of it, the aroma permeating the area.

"That's just heaven," Black said.

Peter Ciccarelli, media relations for the festival, said more than 100,000 people are expected to show up for the three-day event.
