WATSONVILLE Firefighters had their hands full early Thursday with a motorhome that caught fire inside a large storage building. Watsonville Fire Division Chief Pablo Barreto said one engine responded to a water flow alarm at 5:39 a.m. to 335 Industrial Road.

Upon arrival firefighters discovered a small amount of smoke emanating from the mostly metal structure, which led them to call for a full structure response.

Firefighters had to cut their way through a large roll-up metal door. Inside they found the building charged with heavy smoke.

Firefighters eventually traced the source to a fire inside a Dynasty Monaco class A motorhome. They eventually pulled the behemoth vehicle outdoors.

Workers at the facility rushed to haul a mountain of wood furniture that was in storage outdoors to further avoid smoke and water damage. Several boats and other vehicles were also moved outdoors, Barreto said.

Firefighters believe the fire had been burning for a while. The interior of the motorhome was destroyed.

No injuries were reported.

Since electricity had to shut down some fruit from inside a cold storage at the facility was most likely damaged, Barreto said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Pajaro Valley Fire, Aptos/La Selva Fire and North Monterey County Fire also responded.

Damaged was placed at $150,000.
