WATSONVILLE — Laughter fills an upstairs room at the Veterans Memorial Building, as youth are led in a team building activity based on old childhood favorite “Simon Says” during Santa Cruz County Friday Night Live Youth Leadership Training on Tuesday.

The game is part of a week-long program where youth from 12 to 20 participate in a series of activities that build leadership skills and gets them involved in community service.

Friday Night Live, which has chapters at schools and youth organizations, including Boys and Girls Clubs and Youth N.O.W. in Watsonville, throughout the county, focuses on alcohol and tobacco awareness and prevention, as well as safe driving practices.

After the week-long training, youth will commence work on three initiatives that aim to keep tobacco and alcohol out of the hands of underage youth while creating safe retail spaces.

Friday Night Live youth will work hand in hand with law enforcement on the Lee Law project, named after the California Business and Professions Code enacted in 1994 and which requires off-sale alcohol retailers — liquor stores, grocery stores (not bars or restaurants) — to abide by a set of public health and safety standards to protect the surrounding neighborhoods from problems relating to alcohol sales.

Youth will focus on two provisions of the law — that no more than 33 percent of window space is covered with advertising or signage and that law enforcement have a clear view of the shop’s interior, including the cash registers.
