Gelato maker well known throughout the region

WATSONVILLE — For a time, Massimo Caporale took to the skies as leader of the Italian hang gliding team, a sport that first caught his attention when he was skiing in the Swiss Alps and saw a man soaring under one of the giant sails.

Drawing from his knowledge of hang gliders, he went on to a career designing sails for catamarans.

Before that, he worked in the hotel industry in Italy and is trained as a pastry chef.

But running through his life of adventure was another passion entirely: he wanted to make gelato, an Italian-style ice cream.

To become acquainted with the business he worked in a small shop in Lake Como, which is nestled in Italy’s lakes region near the border of Switzerland.

Once he had a grasp of making the product, there remained the question of where he would begin his own business.

After considering settling in New Zealand, a friend gave Caporale a flier depicting the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

He came here for a visit in October 1987 and was hooked.

“I stayed three weeks, and I thought, ‘this is my place,’” he said.
