WATSONVILLE — Summer is in full swing and the city’s summer programs are well under way after budget cuts left some with an uncertain future.

The summer drop-in lunch programs at Marinovich and Callaghan parks faced cancellation due to budget concerns, but a Watsonville-based nonprofit stepped in to help save the programs.

The Community Actions Board of Santa Cruz County secured enough money to staff and maintain the program at Callaghan Park, run by the city’s Parks and Community Services department. The city’s Public Works and Utilities Department volunteered to provide staffing.

La Manzana Community Resources provides the food for the programs, but the parks department was in charge of staffing the sites in their jurisdiction. The drop-in children’s meal programs serve some 35 to 60 meals a day. This year, the parks department provides the locations but everything else is administered by the other organizations.

Meanwhile, the department’s other summer programs appear to be flourishing.
