APTOS — An Aptos man died early Thursday morning in a smoky fire that broke out on the second floor of his Vienna Drive home. The victim’s name has not been released.

Aptos/La Selva Fire Chief Jeff Terpstra said emergency dispatchers initially got a call at 3 a.m. about someone screaming for help on the 3400 block of Vienna Drive. Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies and one engine from Aptos/La Selva Fire responded, Terpstra said, but the deputies did not find the source of the trouble or detect signs of smoke.

Eventually the deputies and firefighters traced signs of smoke coming from a two-story home where they located a woman out front pleading for help.

“Once we realized we had a house charged with smoke we upgraded our response to a full structure fire,” Terpstra said. “Then we learned we had a rescue in progress. It took us about 15 minutes to locate a man in an upstairs bedroom adjacent to another bedroom where the fire was.”
