APTOS — A 40-year-old transient murdered his parents at their home in the Aptos hills Sunday night, prompting a three-hour manhunt before he was arrested after a short struggle with deputies, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

James Roland Henderson was found asleep in a nearby corral, wearing only underwear and a shoe, a source close to the investigation said.

He was charged with two counts of murder, resisting arrest and vandalism. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on $750,000 bail.

According to emergency dispatchers, Edith Henderson called 911 to report that someone had run over her husband with a vehicle. That phone call cut off in mid-sentence, and she was discovered dead with blunt force trauma to her body, deputies said.

Deputies received a call at 4:49 p.m. of a family disturbance on the 100 block of Ridgeview Drive, a rural, affluent neighborhood in the Aptos hills above Cabrillo College.

When they arrived they found Joseph Henderson, 71, and Edith Henderson, 68, both dead.

Investigators believe that James Henderson hit his father with a car and attacked his mother, then fled on foot.
