WATSONVILLE It was a daunting task, especially in the 80-degree weather, but scores of volunteers young and old rose to the occasion and took the first steps toward beautifying the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds on Wednesday in advance of the annual fair in September.

According to Dave Schnitter, a volunteer who is organizing the flower preparation, more than 10,000 flowers, from petunias, marigolds, impatiens and others, were to be planted.

Planting should wrap up by the end of the week, he said, but the job got a large boost during the three-hour event Wednesday. Schnitter expects the flowers to begin blooming in six weeks.

Maryann Bulich Schnitter, who was planting rows of flowers with a group of longtime friends, said there were about 20 plots around the fairgrounds that needed to be filled with flowers.

The flowers were purchased from Cavanaugh Nursery in Watsonville and Kawahara Nursery in Morgan Hill.

"It's a good community project," she said.

Nancy Perryman said she's been volunteering during the annual planting day for "years and years."
