WATSONVILLE A family of six was displaced after a fire broke out at an apartment complex on Rogge Street early Tuesday morning.

According to the Watsonville Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to a report of an exterior light flickering at 430 Rogge St. around 4:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived they found light smoke issuing from the second floor attic and eaves of the apartment building.

A smoldering fire was found burning in the insulation of the attic. Firefighters cut ventilation holes in the roof and ceiling of the apartment to release smoke, hot gases and to aid in clearing the attic of a large amount of burned insulation.

The American Red Cross of Santa Cruz County assisted the displaced family with temporary housing and essentials.

Aptos/La Selva Fire Protection District, Cal Fire/Pajaro Valley Fire Protection District, North Monterey County Fire Protection District, an American Medical Response (AMR) supervisor and Watsonville Police also responded to the scene.

The fire is currently under investigation.
