SANTA CRUZ — Santa Cruz Police early Thursday morning arrested a man after he was caught burglarizing a Pacific Avenue business.

Nathan Kelly, 22, was charged with first-degree burglary and booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on $25,000 bail.

According to the Santa Cruz Police Department, officers were dispatched to a business on the 1100 block of Pacific Avenue at 4:25 a.m. The officers established a perimeter around the business and were able to see Kelly inside the store, wearing gloves and a bandanna across his face and carrying a crowbar.

The officers found the door to the business pried open, and saw that Kelly had placed several items near the door. One of the items included a Martin acoustic guitar valued at $1,500.

The officers confronted Kelly at gunpoint as he came out of a back room in the store, and he surrendered without resistance. Officers found the crowbar concealed in his pants.

According to police, Kelly admitted to the burglary and to prying the doors to the business with the crowbar. He also admitted to attempting to steal the guitar.

Kelly’s recent history of arrest includes two citations for illegal camping in the past 30 days.

Investigators will be looking at several similar burglaries in the downtown area to see if Kelly is connected to any of the unresolved cases, police said.
