WATSONVILLE — Esperanza Haney died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, June 6, 2013. She was 84.
She was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, on Feb. 16, 1929. She came to the United States with her daughter, Thelma, in 1956. She proudly earned her high school diploma and obtained US Citizenship.
Mrs. Haney was a hard worker and opened Esperanza’s Café in 1976. After several successful years she relocated and reopened as Esperanza’s Marisco’s. She enjoyed her faith, gardening, dancing and cooking. She liked to help others when they were in need, but most of all she loved to spend time with her loved ones.
Mrs. Haney was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Haney, in 1980. She is survived by her daughter, Thelma (Stephen) Nelms; three granddaughters and one great-grandson.
Visitation will be held at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel on Monday from 5-9 p.m. with a vigil/rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, Tuesday at 10 a.m., with a burial to follow at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park. Donations are preferred in her name to Alzheimer’s research.
