WATSONVILLE — The Watsonville City Council approved a plan to add a new 7-Eleven store on Freedom Boulevard with beer and wine sales Tuesday.
The council voted 5-1, with Councilman Daniel Dodge dissenting and Councilwoman Trina Coffman-Gomez absent.
The store will fill a spot on the corner of Freedom Boulevard and Alta Vista Avenue that has been home to a vacant gas station for a number of years.
Owner Shashi Sharma said he plans to open the new 7-Eleven within two months, and will later seek a modification to his permit to add a car wash.
The proposal was brought to the City Council after the Planning Commission on April 2 made no decision, due to three of the seven commissioners absent because of illness or travel.
Similar to concerns raised by the Planning Commission, some members of the council said they felt the city has an over-concentration of places to buy alcohol. Because of his role in establishing the city's alcohol ordinance, Dodge voted against the proposal, although he said he believed "Mr. Sharma will be an asset to this community."For the complete article see the 05-16-2013 issue.
