Mariners fall short of SCCAL title

Posted: Saturday, May 11th, 2013

The Aptos Mariners’ hot streak and their season came to an end as they were topped by the Soquel Knights 6-1 on Thursday night at Harvey West Park.

The Mariners hopes of bringing home a piece of the Santa Cruz Coastal Athletic League title were all but eliminated in the first inning of the game when they gave up to six runs to the Knights.

With the Knight’s ace Chris Viall on the mound it was an almost impossible task for the Mariners to make any kind of come back effort.

Viall went the distance and struck out 12 Mariners on the night.

Tommy Leonardini took the loss for the Mariners. Steve Eichhorn went 2-3 and scored the only Aptos run of the night.

• Watsonville 7, North Monterey County 6: The Watsonville Wildcatz closed out their season with a thrilling 7-6 win over the North Monterey County Condors on Friday night.

The Wildcatz were tied with the Condors at four going into the fifth inning, but Noah Barto laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home a go-ahead run.

The Condors answered with two runs of their own in the very next inning to take the lead.

The Wildcatz were not going to be denied the win. Canek Gomez brought in a run to start off the come back effort, and once against Noah Barto came to the plate with a chance to give the Catz the lead.

He delivered with a RBI single that gave the Wildcatz the game-winning run.

Ryan Munoz got the win for the Catz. He gave up five hits, two walks and one earned run.

Demitri Navarro went 2-3 with a double and two runs. Rex Gomez finished 2-2 with two runs.

The Wildcatz are headed to the CCS playoffs after finishing second in the Monterey Bay League Pacific.
