SANTA CRUZ Big things are happening at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, but perhaps none are as prominent as the new orange and blue structure that has risen near the park's entrance.

That structure will soon support seven vehicles, each carry four guests, which will spin them through sharp turns and steep drops, while reaching speeds of up to 40 mph.

Undertow, a spinning roller coaster that is the Boardwalk's new pride and joy for the 2013 season, is slated to open in June.

The final piece of track was hoisted into place Monday, and the remaining steel work is expected to be complete by the end of the week, said Kris Reyes, Boardwalk community relations director.

Once open, the ride will be the only spinning roller coaster in Northern California, according to the Boardwalk.

Undertow replaces Hurricane, a blue-and-white coaster that made its debut at the Boardwalk in 1992. That ride was sold to Western Playland Amusement Park in New Mexico, where it was recently reconstructed and preparing to open to the public.
