Man shot in leg Friday night

Modified: Saturday, May 4th, 2013

WATSONVILLE Watsonville Police are looking for two suspects who shot a man in a parking lot on Sudden Street and East Lake Avenue Friday night.

According to Sgt. Mike McKinley, officers arrived in the area of Sudden Street and East Lake Avenue around 7:30 p.m. and contacted several witnesses who said a shooting had occurred in the parking lot of a nearby business. The witnesses said the suspects shot and wounded a male in the leg.

Both the suspects and the victim left the scene after the shooting, McKinley said.

Shortly after, around 8 p.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a gunshot victim having just arrived at Watsonville Community Hospital. Officers responded and contacted an adult male who had suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his right leg, McKinley said. The victim was treated and later released from the hospital.

During the course of the investigation, officers learned two male suspects approached, confronted and shot the victim before fleeing on foot. After being shot, the victim was transported by a private vehicle to Watsonville Community Hospital for treatment. Watsonville Police Detectives were called out and have taken over the investigation.

The shooting is being investigated as a gang-motivated crime, McKinley said.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the WPD Investigations Unit at 768-3352 or the Crime Tip Line at 768-3544.
