WATSONVILLE — Watsonville High School Athletic Director Brad Hubbard announced his retirement as athletic director this week, although he is credentialed for math and life science and will continue teaching.

When Hubbard received the first-ever Friends of the Wildcatz award during the school’s Hall of Fame presentations in 2011, his ultra-short acceptance speech consisted of a brief, “thank you very much” before he dashed off stage.

He explained later that he wanted the attention to go to the hall of fame recipients.

But Hubbard’s coworkers say that humility is a hallmark of a man variously described as dedicated and hard working. He announced his retirement as athletic director this week, although he is credentialed for math and life science and will continue teaching.
