Mariners take down St. Francis behind Eichhorn

Posted: Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

The Aptos Mariners made a huge statement on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-3 win over the first place St. Francis Central Coast Catholic Sharks.

The Sharks made a final attack in the seventh, but they came up just one run short of the tie to force extras.

Steve Eichhorn pitched a solid complete game for the Mariners. He gave up six hits, three runs and one walk. He struck out five Sharks on the day.

The Sharks jumped out to a slim 1-0 lead in the third inning, but the Mariners responded by scoring four runs in the fourth off of St. Francis starting pitcher Jonathan Carmona. It was Carmona’s final inning as Joshua Rodriguez came in to close the game.

The Sharks are now in a 9-2 tie with the Soquel Knights for first place in the SCCAL. They have a date with the Knights this Friday for the number one seed in the SCCAL playoffs that start next week.

The Mariners will finish up the season with a game against the San Lorenzo Valley Cougars on Friday and a friendly against the Gilroy Mustangs on Saturday.

Watsonville 10, Alvarez 2:

The Watsonville Wildcatz improved their MBL record and their CCS playoff resume with a shellacking of the Everett Alvarez Eagles on Wednesday afternoon at Everett Alvarez High School.

Every Watsonville hitter on the lineup card had a hit, and they combined for 14 on the day.

Chris Rivera was the winning pitcher and he allowed four hits in his seven inning complete game. He also threw nine strikeouts.

Rivera had a good game with the bat as well. He finished 2-4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs. Rex Gomez went 3-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Noah Barto added a run and a RBI.

The Wildcatz are rolling on a four game winning streak and will travel to Seaside on Wednesday. The Catz are 2-0 this season against the Spartans, beating them earlier this year in a two-game series. If the Catz win on Wednesday they will take complete control of second place in the MBL Pacific.
