WATSONVILLE — The Health Services Agency of Santa Cruz County will be overseeing a new syringe service program, which got under way Tuesday. Syringe Service Program participants will be offered referrals to substance abuse treatment programs, mental health services, medical services and information on disease prevention, said Laurie Lang, Senior Health Educator
Two self-service kiosks have also been set up outside of each of the clinics for the disposal of syringes. The kiosks are to be used for the disposal of prescription and non-prescription syringes.
The syringe exchange program practice is based on evidence from a multitude of studies, which have shown syringe exchange programs to be very effective in reducing HIV and Hepatitis C rates among injection drug users as well as helping to get IDUs into treatment, Lang said.
