Sumano’s Bakery on the rise

WATSONVILLE — Ray Sumano began his baking career as a young boy in his native Oaxaca, Mexico, where he would help a family friend make Mexican sweet pastries such as conchas.

Despite his hard work, Sumano never earned a peso. Instead, he agreed to a different, tastier form of compensation.

“I wasn’t there for the pay,” he said. “I was there to eat bread.”

Sumano came to the U.S. in 1984, bringing his love for baking with him. Along with his brother, he was soon working in a series of local bakeries.

Having built their baking skills over the years, the brothers were ready to start their own business when their last employer closed.

“We ended up with no place to go,” Sumano said. “We were in the business for a long time, and we knew how to make bread. We thought we could do a good job.”
