WATSONVILLE With construction wrapped up in February, the Salinas Road Interchange project was celebrated Friday, with officials hailing it as a much-needed improvement to a vital transportation corridor.

The $31 million project, which broke ground in April 2010, is expected to reduce delays for up to 43,000 vehicles daily by enabling traffic on Salinas Road to cross above Highway 1 instead of waiting at the intersection that was level with the highway.

By eliminating left-turn conflicts, the new overcrossing also improves traffic safety in an area that saw 83 accidents and three fatalities between 2001-2005, according to the Transportation Agency for Monterey County.

"With those long left turns and people taking their chances, everyone knew we needed to do something here," said Tim Gubbins, Caltrans District 5 director.

In addition to the three-lane overcrossing, the project also added three diamond-type ramps, one southbound loop on-ramp and a turnout area with parking spots and a bus stop.
