Watsonville scores six in the first, cruises to win

Modified: Thursday, Apr 25th, 2013

WATSONVILLE — The Watsonville Wildcatz jumped out to an early lead after a six-run first inning and they cruised to a 10-run rule win over the Marina Mariners on Monday night, 12-2.

The Wildcatz’s (11-9, 7-6) base running was brilliant in the first as they continued to put the pressure on the catcher to try and gun runners out.

Chris Rivera started off the inning by stealing home to score the game’s first run. The Catz were only getting started as Demitri Navarro smacked a single to bring in Rex Gomez to make the score 2-0.

James Duran then came around to score off of a wild pitch and David Ortiz also came home for the Catz to up their lead to 4-0.

The Catz wouldn’t let up with their aggressive base running as Josh Beltran took off for third and came in hot with a face first slide to beat the tag, but the throw from the Marina Catcher to third was too high and Beltran picked himself up from the slide and trotted the rest of the way to tack on another run.

Noah Barto made it home to add the final run of inning and put the Catz up by six.

They added another run in the second, but Barto could not keep Marina scoreless as the Mariners scored their only two runs of the game in the final inning of Barto’s day.

Just when the Mariners thought they were safe from the 10-run rule cutting the game short the Wildcatz went back to work with their bats.

Rivera continued his solid day dropping a blooper just passed the shortstop into center field to bring in Barto. Duran then hit a fast traveling dribbler past the shortstop and sent Rivera on a dash towards home to make the score 9-2. Duran later scored to cap the inning and give the Wildcatz an eight run lead, their biggest one of the night so far.

The Catz smelt blood in the water and attacked in the following inning to put the game away early.

Gomez hit a deep ball into left field that bounced off the wall and had Rivera chugging past second and third base to come home to the promised land for the score. Gomez was able to slide into third beating the tag and putting himself into scoring position.

Duran rewarded Gomez for his hustle by hitting a triple that easily brought him for the final score of the game.

Barto was the winning pitcher only having to pitch three innings. He had a fine day only giving up three hits, two runs and a walk. He struck out three Mariners.

Duran had a monster game for the Catz finishing 3-3, with two runs and an RBI. Rivera went 3-4 with an RBI and three runs. Gomez scored three times, added an RBI and closed the game.

The Wildcatz have Alisal coming into town on Wednesday for the first of five league games to close out the year. They have beaten Alisal twice this year with a combined score of 17-1 in those two games.
