WATSONVILLE For the past 25 years, a group of young people has set off on an annual life-changing journey. They return a little older, a little wiser and rich with countless new friends and cultural experiences from a country vastly different from their own.

The weeklong exchange trip to Kawakami, Japan is a chance for students to live with a host family for a week, sample a new cuisine and see a landscape and architecture to which their young eyes are unaccustomed.

But more than that, the Kawakami-Watsonville Sister City exchange program is a chance for the students, many of whom have never traveled or been on a plane to expand their horizons.

Im excited about going, said Lakeview Middle School student Alex Wong, 13. Its a once in a lifetime opportunity. Most kids dont get to do things like this at this age.
