Watsonville business a growth industry

WATSONVILLE Sun Land Gardens Products began its life in the 1950s as a poultry farm, launched by Ed Minasian upon his return from the U.S. Air Force as a way to support his new family.

He soon realized that the sawdust he used for bedding mixed with the chicken manure made an excellent fertilizer, and the demand for the product by local farmers prompted Minasian to change the focus of his business.

Sun Land Gardens Products was born.

Soon, Minasian began to mix more materials into his blends based on customer requests, including redwood mulch, perlite, dry fertilizers, peat mulch, crushed lava rock and sand, each of which tweaked the acidity, moisture, salinity and other aspects of the blends.
