RIO DEL MAR — Police are investigating the death of a woman who was pulled from the surf early Wednesday on the 300 block of Beach Drive.
A resident along Beach Drive initially reported seeing what they thought was a man enter the water about 7:55 a.m. while fully clothed. The witness, aided with binoculars, told dispatchers the man eventually disappeared in the surf several hundred yards south of the cement ship.
Aptos/La Selva Fire rescue swimmers charged into the water and pulled the woman to shore at 8:25 a.m. She was declared deceased at 8:45 a.m.
The woman’s name and place of residence was not released.
Mike McMenamy, Public Safety Superintendent with California State Parks, said the incident is being treated as a suicide and that it is still under investigation.
McMenamy said the woman, 58, was on vacation with her husband of 30 years and had come over the hill to stay at the Rio Sands Hotel in Rio Del Mar, in part to celebrate his birthday.
As the rescue was unfolding the husband awoke at Rio Sands to discover his wife was not present.
At one point during the rescue the husband approached emergency personnel on the beach to report his missing wife, and it was then learned that his wife was the victim.
