WATSONVILLE — Six decades ago, Maybern “Red” Shugart and his wife Adelaide founded Monument Lumber — a Watsonville business that has weathered the years at the same location at 2111 Freedom Boulevard.

That was after Maybern worked in Watsonville’s food processing industry, then started with Hammond Lumber. He went on to start the business in 1952.

“I guess he got the bug for the lumber business,” said Mark Shugart, who took over the business from his father after his death last year.

Since then, the family-owned business has expanded from a small shop into a 7,200-square-foot store and a 4.5-acre lumberyard. It has also built a giant list of clients, all the while staying true to its local roots.

Such an endeavor is all the more important in an age when family-run businesses are being buried by giant corporations, and customer service falls by the wayside, said Mark Shugart,

“With family businesses you get a sense of community,” Shugart said. “We try to give excellent service and build relationships with our customers.”
