AROMAS Although construction started in December, the Highway 101/San Juan Road Interchange project officially broke ground Friday.

The $91 million project, which Caltrans awarded the contract to Granite Construction and MCM Construction, will significantly reduce congestion and increase safety on a dangerous stretch of Highway 101 between Dunbarton and Cole roads, said Colin Jones, Caltrans spokesman.

About 212 traffic accidents occurred from 2000-2010 in the corridor, which sees more than 60,000 vehicles a day passing through, according to the Transportation Agency for Monterey County.

Workers will remove three major at-grade intersections on San Juan, Dunbarton and Cole roads and replace them with a single overpass near the Red Barn at San Juan Road.

The project is expected to be complete in early 2015, Jones said.

It is supported by $10 million from the Recovery Act and $28 million from Proposition 1B, a 2006 voter-approved bond.

Assemblyman Luis Alejo said the project will address a wide range of traffic issues in the area, and will protect "thousands" of lives.

"This is a historic moment, because people have been talking about this improvement project for decades," he said. "From personal observation, I've seen the need for this project to move forward."
