Neighborhood Services Division announces new downtown target area

WATSONVILLE — Downtown Watsonville boasts numerous businesses, non-profit organizations, schools and residences, which when combined offers the best, and the worst, of Watsonville.

With years of history dating back to the mid-1800s, the city has been forged by the hands of numerous cultures that have left in their wake a vibrant city and a people whose civic pride still is still evident in lively civic debate.

But recent census studies have also shown the area to be the most wracked by crime, and populated by many for whom the social services, government offices and other opportunities available are either unknown or out of reach.

It is for those residents that the city’s Neighborhood Services Division has created its latest Target Neighborhood. The department held a launch Friday afternoon at the Watsonville Gene Hoularis & Waldo Rodriguez Youth Center on Maple Avenue.
