WATSONVILLE On a February day in Watsonville, a man had just come out of the Foodmaxx grocery store on Main Street, his hands so laden with bags that he dropped a handful of coins on the ground. Nearly all the people waiting in line at Yogurtland did nothing.

Only one boy, 12-year-old Pedro Navarro, came to help Hall pick up the coins. The boy then went on his way to where his family was waiting for their yogurt.

A few days later Hartnell College student Arnold Mora was walking through the campus when he came upon a young girl who had gotten her kite stuck in a tree.

Without a word, Mora, 24, took one book bag from his shoulder, removed his backpack and reached into the tree to retrieve the kite. He then handed it to the girl, picked up his bags and went on his way.

Mora and Navarro may never have given their kind acts a second thought, but Watsonville resident Elyse Destout had other ideas.
