WATSONVILLE — A proposal to add a 7-Eleven convenience store on Freedom Boulevard failed to garner enough votes Tuesday from the Watsonville Planning Commission after some commissioners expressed concern that the area is overflowing with places to buy alcohol.
Four out of the seven commissioners were present, who voted 2-2, with Pedro Castillo and Jenny Sarmiento dissenting. An item on the agenda requires four "yes" votes to pass.
The existing 1,266-square-feet closed gas station, on the corner of Freedom Boulevard and Alta Vista Avenue, had been proposed to expand to 2,363 square feet as a 7-Eleven store and include beer and wine sales.
The business last operated as Olympian Gas.
"I have some reservations about another place selling alcohol," Castillo said. "Alcohol is a very serious problem in this community."
