WATSONVILLE — For the students at Lakeview Middle School, relying solely on traditional physical education is a thing of the past.

That’s because the school recently purchased 50 stationary exercise bicycles, which allow the students to get their heart rates up and their bodies moving without throwing them into competitive games such as soccer or basketball, for which many are ill equipped.

Because the bikes are stationary and indoors, the students also get to listen to music and watch videos as they work out.

“We’ve found that over the years kids have lost interest in old-school P.E.,” said P.E. teacher Todd Wilson.

And so Wilson and his fellow teachers asked themselves how they could get their students to exercise for extended periods of time while staying engaged.

“With the music and the video and the biking, I’ve totally got it,” he said.
