WATSONVILLE To raise awareness of aging issues seniors face, Meals on Wheels for Santa Cruz County invited local elected officials from across the county Wednesday to experience the impact meal deliveries have on the citizens.

In conjunction with Meals on Wheels Association of America, the national March For Meals campaign helps the nonprofit gain visibility on the services it offers.

"The initial thrust of the campaign is to enlarge the awareness of senior nutrition issues and senior isolation issues," said Lisa Berkowitz, program director of Meals on Wheels for Santa Cruz County.

On Wednesday, Santa Cruz County Supervisor Greg Caput traveled with Clara Brace as she delivered meals to residents in the Resetar Residential Hotel.

"This is the meal of the day for a lot of people," said Caput, who previously served as a volunteer in the program.

Other local officials participated in the event, including Watsonville Mayor Lowell Hurst, Santa Cruz Mayor Hilary Bryant and representatives from the offices of U.S. Rep. Sam Farr and Senator Bill Monning.

Meals on Wheels is seeking volunteers. For information, call 464-3180, extension 104.
