WATSONVILLE — A big crowd of more than 160 crammed into a building at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Wednesday afternoon for the annual National Agriculture Day Spring Luncheon, hosted by the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau and Agri-Culture.

One of the highlights of the luncheon — held at the Codiga Center and Museum — is the naming of the winners in the poetry and poster contests, as well as the recipients of the Al Smith award and Jimmie Cox Memorial Scholarship.

The 2013 Poetry Contest winner is Kyle Calloway, a seventh-grader at Monte Vista Christian School in Watsonville. Kyle recited his poem to the large crowd, which rewarded him with heartfelt applause.

Monte Vista was well represented in the poetry contest, as the school took all the prizes in that category.

The 2013 Poster Contest winner is Siena Gallo, a fifth-grader at Linscott Charter School in Watsonville.

“This year there were more entries than ever,” said Silvia Prevedelli, owner of Prevedelli farms.

“We are very happy for that,” she said, adding that she’s pleased to see more students taking an interest in agriculture.
