SANTA CRUZ — The St. Francis Central Coast Catholic High baseball team used a six-run sixth inning to break by Santa Cruz for a 7-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Dodge Field.

With the win, the Sharks improved to 2-0 in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play.

Ten batters went to the plate for the Sharks in the fateful sixth inning.

Jonathan Carmona was a part of the big inning, hitting a chopper down the third-base line for a double to bring home David Gugale and Dillon Houser and give the Sharks a 5-1 lead. He later came home on a two-RBI single by R.J. Zuniga — Nick Ciandro also scored — and the Sharks were rolling with a 7-1 lead.

Earlier in the sixth, Calvin Anderson-Nakagawa and Houser each brought in a run home without getting an official hit. Anderson-Nakagawa swung at strike three in the dirt but beat out a wild throw to first to bring in a run. Houser hit a grounder to the Santa Cruz second baseman, who booted it, plating another run.

Carmona was the star on the mound, going the distance while striking out two and giving up just four hits.

At one point, he retired 10 in a row. A Santa Cruz batter hit a single to start off the second inning, and he eventually reached third base. But he was left stranded there, as Carmona worked out of the jam.

Santa Cruz tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of a walk. Carmona limited the damage by getting a double play. That seemed to rally the Sharks, who carried the momentum into their big six-run inning.
